5 Tips For Making Your Dog’s Kennel Comfy

Ankita Singhal January 2023
It can be challenging for your pawed pal to adjust to a new dog kennel. Some dogs are extra fussy, and others? Not so much. It only sometimes matters how much time and effort you put into finding the best dog kennel. Your dog could still lose interest and head straight for a shady spot on the veranda instead. You should buy a durable dog kennel so your dog can enjoy their Crate more if it feels comfortable and is a space they will enjoy spending time in.

Your dog's crate will ideally become their home within a home: a place of rest where they sleep at the end of each day and enjoy some alone time if needed. But many pet parents need help acclimating their new puppies to their crates, and even adult dogs may only be comfortable in crates if they have everything they need. Improving kennel living conditions is essential to ensure maximum comfort and safety.

A dog kennel should provide the essential shelter that your dog needs to be happy, healthy, and comfortable. There are plenty of tried-and-true methods for making a comfortable dog kennel, regardless of the breed or temperament. If you introduce your dog or puppy to the crate, the crate will soon become a safe space in which your dog enjoys resting.

To help you out, we're more than happy to share a few tips for a comfortable kennel. You can do a few things to encourage your dog to spend more time in the kennel.

Steps to make a kennel comfortable:

1. Find a good location.

When you crate-train a young puppy, keep them close to you so you can keep an eye on them. However, keep your dog's crate out of high-traffic areas of your home, especially if your dog likes to use it for sleeping. It would help if you kept it out of spaces where there may be loud noises, such as your laundry room, and other hazards like power cords or outlets. In my experience, young puppies do better when their crate is closer to their family. Choose a crate location where your dog is most comfortable and can rest peacefully, where space allows.

2. Make sure there is room to move.

Is there enough space for your dog to move around in their dog kennel? Consider what your dog does when they find a comfortable place to sit. Dogs typically turn around the entire circle before plopping themselves down. Your dog should be able to do the same in their new dog kennel. Ideally, your dog needs enough space to stand up, turn around, n and stretch within the confines of their dog kennel. Alternatively, ensure that the kennel is a manageable size. The extra space may encourage them to do their business there too. Here's our most recent article on choosing the right size dog kennel.

3. Dog Bedding

Adding a comfy cushion and crate mat will help make the inside of your dog's Crate more inviting and pleasant. Some dogs prefer a covered dog crate. These blankets and pillows will keep them warm during the cold weather and make them more comfortable overall. It would help if you covered any concrete area with padding, as it can be rough on a dog's fur and skin. You should know dog kennel cleaning tips. It would help if you got a bed as close to the crate as possible. That way, the mattress does not slide around or move around too much, plus it also helps to prevent your dog from playing on or chewing on the bed.

4. Hide treats in Crate

You can close the treats inside the Crate for a few minutes to build your dog's interest or let the dog get to them immediately. It is OK if the dog pokes its head in to get the treats. Gradually move the dogs back into the Crate until the dog has to go entirely inside to get them. During practice periods, do a -drive-by on your dog's Crate and occasionally slip a treat through the cracks. A great way to prevent your dog from being bored is to include bully sticks or something similar for your dog to chew on while you're away. If you only give him these treats while he's in his kennel, he'll associate the Crate with happiness.

5. Add more toys

Toys are essential to making your dog's crate extraordinarily comfortable and enjoyable! Two to three toys are enough to keep your dog happy and occupied. While toys are not necessary for a dog crate, they have many benefits. Hard chew toys are the best type of dog crate toys because they are difficult to destroy and thus last a long time.

Another great way to keep your dog entertained while you're away is to provide bully sticks or something similar for your dog to chew on. If you only give him these treats while he's in his kennel, he'll associate the crate with happiness. If your dog isn't responding well to treats, try putting a favourite toy or a brand new and particularly appealing chew toy inside the crate.
