8 Things to Know About Hamsters

Unless you have been completely oblivious, you might have heard at least one person mention their pet hamster. Whether they're talking about their fluffy friend's cuteness or the heat and noise-free environment it provides, it's clear that these little guys have become a new obsession for many people.
But what are hamsters like? Do they make good pets? Read on to find out.

Hamsters are small, cute animals with prominent personalities! They are rodents and belong in the same family as rats and mice. You can easily tame Hamsters, and they adore human contact. Hamsters are notorious escape artists. Their small size enables them to squeeze into small cracks and holes; many can wheel and somersault their way through these openings. To deter them from escaping, make sure you have a secure cage or if you want to walk your hamster on a leash, purchase one of the available harnesses. These rodents do not have teeth – they use their grinding plates (the two rectangular areas in their mouth) to grind food.

8 Things to Know About Hamsters

Things to keep in mind
1. If you have a male and a female hamster, they can only be kept together if they are promised to each other (if they're siblings, or if you're sure they won't breed). In this case, the female's belly may swell up – she will probably not groom herself and be lethargic. It is a sign that she is pregnant! So if you have any doubts, separate them right away.

2. You should not house the Syrian hamster with any other hamsters. It shouldn't even be kept in the same room! It can sometimes get aggressive towards its kind – especially as it gets older – so it needs its own cage.

3 . A secure cage is the best way to prevent your hamster from escaping. But if you need something cheap and easy, you can look up a steel folding hamster colony on eBay. However, be sure it won't collapse or trap your hamster inside, as they're notorious escape artists.

4. Hamsters like to run around in wheeled things for exercise – which doesn't sound too bad! But just like kids, they tire out very quickly and need to rest more often than other small animals. As a result, they don't make good pet owners; their energy levels are very different from people's.

5. Hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they prefer to sleep during the day and be active at night.

6. Although they are called "pocket pets," hamsters aren't sold as such – they grow to 16 - 24 inches long, depending on their diet and environment, and can weigh up to 3 pounds! You'll need a massive cage for this kind of pet.

7. Hamsters are timid creatures and a little skittish: don't let them out alone at night! Whenever you walk them, pet them gently on the chest; this is their favorite place for affection from humans!

8 . Hamsters are omnivorous, meaning they eat both plants and insects.
