How to Groom Your Dog at Home, According to Experts

Mr n Mrs Pet November 2021
We all love our furry companions more than anything in the world and want to give them only the best, be it food, toys, or medical attention. But another essential part of their well-being is keeping them clean and hygienic. Although most dogs do not require daily cleaning like humans, it is still imperative to ensure that your best friend gets regularly spruced up!

Grooming one's dog is an essential part of being a pet parent. Many professional groomers and veterinary practitioners will be well-equipped to provide the necessary care for your dog, but it never hurts to know the procedure yourself. So in this article, you will learn how to DIY a professional-like grooming service at home.

Brushing

The foremost step of grooming is brushing the coat. The more you brush, the better. It helps tidy up the dog and stimulates blood circulation, and removes any dandruff flakes from the fur. Different types of equipment are available to brush the coat properly. It depends on the length and texture of your dog's skin and any special needs it might require.

Some areas to thoroughly brush are behind the ears and under the legs - stubborn plant matter can often be found stuck here. You can also check for any injuries while gently touching the back and legs.

Shedding is a natural occurrence in animals, but you can control it by brushing regularly.

Bathing

Bathing a dog might look complicated, but it should be pretty easy if you follow these steps.
  • Place your dog in a tub or basin.
  • Put cotton balls in its ears and some mineral oil in its eyes.
  • Use warm water and start washing with shampoo from the neck back.
  • After properly lathering and scrubbing, rinse thoroughly with warm water only.
  • Rub your dog dry with a towel, let it shake itself too.
  • Although blow-drying is not always necessary; you should comb the fur with a brush to settle it down.
Although it is required regularly, you should avoid giving your dog too many washes as it can remove many natural oils from its coat and make it dry.

Nail Trimming

Neatly trimmed nails are very important to regulate. If you let them grow very long, they can get in the way of the dog's walking and make everyday activities very painful. If left alone for too long, it can also prove dangerous. A common sign of trimming them is if you can hear them against the floor when the dog walks.

Now, if you are not too familiar with the way to go about this, there are specially designed clippers, and some of them even have safety guards that stop you from cutting the nails too short. It would help if you trimmed only the ends - the hook-shaped part of the nail and should start cutting gently, only one or two at a time. Avoid missing more than that, as you can quickly cut blood vessels in the pin and cause a nerve issue.

Not all dogs would appreciate a trimming of their nails. To prevent this, you can introduce this procedure from when it is a puppy. However, if your dog is still making it difficult, it is best to take your furry friend to a professional. This way, they will turn to trust you.

It is always good to take precautions. Apply some styptic powder to the wound if you accidentally cut the quick while trimming and start bleeding.

Ear and Eye Cleaning

Although equally essential cleanings, these are not recommended for daily purposes.

Clean your dog's ears once a month or more if he is susceptible to ear problems. Take a damp cloth or cotton swab, soak it in mineral oil and clean only the outer part of the ear. It is very crucial to note that you don't force anything inside the ears. Ask a trusted professional if your dog requires some more cleaning, like plucking the hair outside the ears for circulation purposes.

To clean the eyes, use a damp cotton ball and gently clean the discharges around the area. Don't put anything inside the eyes.

Tooth Brushing

Needed much more frequently than the others, brushing teeth is easy to get the dog used to. Take some specially designed toothpaste and rub its teeth and gums with your finger. You can do this from puppyhood to make a habit of it. There are also special toothbrushes you can use for a better outcome as the dog grows up. Chew toys help in stimulating the movement of gums. Grown dogs tend to develop tartar in their teeth; a veterinarian can remove it with a trip.

Conclusion

Just like humans, dogs, too, need consistent maintenance that makes them more attractive and boosts their immune systems. Take good care of your canine, and they'll take good care of you.
