Relationship with the Dog- Ensure That it Keeps Getting Better

Anushree May 2019
Dogs are man's best friend, no doubts at that. But do best friends become just like that? You need to invest a lot of time and cherish a bond before you can claim to be someone’s best friend. So is the case with our pets. We already told you how life changes after getting a dog in our previous blog. Now that you’ve got one, you need to know how to build a relationship with the dog.

Understand His Personality

Every individual is different from the other, so we cannot and should not approach anyone with presumptions in mind. Pay attention to minor details of your dog and get to know his likes and dislikes and respect them. Ensure some one-to-one time with him, so you can improve your knowledge about certain traits of him (like what he does when he is hungry?). Know his temperament. Though there are websites that tell you the details of your breed, there will be some things about him so particular, that you will get to know only with time. His response to certain situations may be different from other dogs of the same breed. Always be updated about the changes in your dog in order to improve your relationship with the dog.

Communication

Behind every successful relationship is a strong communication. However, with pets, this communication has to be non-verbal which may get a little tricky in the beginning. You have to be patient and understand that it is equally hard for them. Try to use as many visual signs as possible, this is the least you can do since you can’t bark. Make sure that the dog pays more attention to what you do than what you say; this will help him understand you better. Relationship with the dog can be enhanced by communicating through body language as well. Better understanding will gradually improve the communication process between you two.

Train Your Dog Every day

Believe it or not, this really helps in your relationship with the dog. While training, you improve his skills and get to spend a lot of time together. Also, training has its own perks for the dog- TREATS! Just like a human, his heart’s route also goes through his stomach, maybe. A trained dog can enjoy more freedom. You can leave him off the leash for a longer duration. He will show more loyalty and would also try to behave the way you want him to. Ensure that some form of training and positive reinforcement takes place every single day.

Play Every Day

Ensure some play time with the dog every day. Those who play together, stay together. Even with humans, parents who play with their kids have a strong bond with them; same is the case with pet parenting. Keep indulging with them in some or the other playful activity so that they found you interesting. Also, this playtime has to be different from the training time. Both are equally important; and as said, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Touch Your Dog

There is no denying the fact that physical contact plays an important role in building any relationship. There is strong evidence that touches intended with care reduce the stress levels among shelter dogs and positively affect the humans as well. No one buys a dog in order to improve the economy of the country; they are rather viewed as family members. Therefore, treat them as you would any other member of your family.

In the end, it is all about the relationship, which is worth improving no matter how magnificent it is already.
